Charlevoix Main Street (CMS)  sat down with Harbor View Cafe owner Chuck Schilling to talk about the town's go-to breakfast spot! Read on to learn more about the cafe's story. Harbor View 01
CMS: How long have you been in business?
Chuck: Since 2017

CMS: Why did you want to be a small business owner?
Chuck: We have other small businesses and we purchased the Harbor View Cafe in order to have some fun away from our daily work lives.

CMS: Why did you choose to open a business downtown Charlevoix?
We love the Charlevoix community and this is a place where we enjoy spending time, so it fit perfectly into our plans for owning some small businesses as we prepare for retirement.

CMS: Tell me a little bit about your business.

Chuck: We purchased the Harbor View Cafe in 2017 and after 13 days of ownership, it burned down. The Oleson Family rebuilt the strip mall and we restored the restaurant. The idea was to keep the same very successful breakfast and lunch menu within a simple clean space for people to come in, relax and enjoy. We also wanted the restaurant to be a “happy place” for our employees with a family atmosphere.

CMS: What do you enjoy most about living and working in the Charlevoix area?
Chuck: There is so much natural beauty in Charlevoix with such wonderful, thoughtful and generous people.

CMS: What is something unique about your store/business?
Chuck: The Harbor View Cafe features unique art by Edith Pair. These unique paintings were commissioned in 2017 and not implemented until our reopening in 2018. We could not be more pleased with these natural Charlevoix landmarks in abstract art form. They are uniquely spectacular. We love seeing our customers admire them and constantly taking photos of them. It makes us happy!

CMS: How would you describe downtown Charlevoix?

Chuck: Downtown Charlevoix is the perfect community with such pure beauty. The spectacular colors of waters and landscapes change with the seasons. There is never the same sunrise or sunset over Charlevoix. In every season with the lit streets, whether quiet or busy, Downtown provides its own pure beauty. Additionally, the Charlevoix restaurants offer multiple delicious choices that we never get tired of.

CMS: How has Main Street helped your business?
Chuck: This opportunity (cooperative ad campaign & monthly blog feature) is one way Main Street has supported us and the other downtown businesses. The collaboration with the local businesses is always engaging and supportive!

CMS: What’s your favorite thing about your business?
Chuck: Our favorite things about the Harbor View Cafe is our manager Mary and our staff. Mary is such a wonderful, kind and thoughtful community figure. Her support of us and our staff always amazes us! We can not thank her and our staff enough for all they do for us and our customers every single day!

CMS: What’s your favorite Charlevoix event?
Chuck: There are so many, but the offerings during then Venetian Festival are so diverse and fun, that this is our favorite.

CMS: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Chuck: Thank you Lindsey (Dotson), Main Street and the City Officials of Charlevoix! You are doing a wonderful job in making Charlevoix a premier Michigan community and the best it can possibly be!

So glad Harbor View was able to rebuild. Edith Pair’s artwork is beautiful and happy. And You couldn’t ask for a nicer person than Mary managing the restaurant. Glad the new owners are successful.
